[shadow=grey,left,400]Misfire Plan[/shadow]
10.1 Misfire Prevention:
~ Always snap 2 caps prior to the first demonstration to be sure that the vent is clear. (Fire the first cap in a safe direction: Fire second cap aimed at the ground and watch for effects.)
10.2 Misfire Procedure:
~ Musket demonstrations will be performed by at least two persons; an interpreter and a demonstrator. In the event of a misfire, the interpreter will explain the problem. If the misfire occurs during the 9 count loading drill, the demonstrator will follow the commands of the interpreter through the misfire procedure. If the misfire occurs during load and fire at will, the demonstrator will perform these steps automatically, without command.
~ 1st Misfire: Count ten seconds (weapon held at Aim),
~~~~~~ Recover Arms, Prime, Ready, Aim, Fire.
~ 2nd Misfire: Count ten seconds (weapon held at Aim),
~~~~~~ Recover Arms (use vent pick), Prime, Ready, Aim, Fire.
~ 3rd Misfire: Count ten seconds (weapon held at Aim,
~~~~~~ Shoulder Arms. Ground Arms.
~ After three misfires the interpreter will explain that the problem is unresolved and will conclude his presentation. The spectators will be asked to leave the demonstration area. The interpreter will retrieve the misfire kit and assist the demonstrator in clearing his weapon.
~ Misfire kit shall consist of the following tools: Water jug, funnel, cleaning rod with all puller, wiper, musket nipple wrench, vent pick.
10.3 Weapon Clearing Procedure:
~ 1. The demonstrator will recover Arms and, with the interpreter, will proceed to a safe area out of public view. The muzzle of the weapon will be pointed in a safe direction at all times.
~ 2. The cone will be removed from the bolster, the vent in the cone and poster will be cleared with the vent pick and the cone then returned into the bolster. (Screw the cone with fingers, then seat firmly with wrench.)
~ 3. Prime the weapon and attempt to re-fire. If it still misfires, wait ten seconds.
~ 4. Place the butt of the musket on the ground and pour water down the barrel using the funnel and a small amount of water from the jug. (Do not fill the entire barrel.)
~ 5. Pull the paper wad using the cleaning rod/ball puller or rammer/wiper (whichever works best).
~ 6. Loosen the wet powder with the rammer/wiper, point muzzle down to drain barrel.
~ 7. Add fresh water and repeat #6 until no sign of powder remains in barrel.
~ 8. Spring rammer and snap a cap to e sure ore is clear.
10.4 Other Problems
~ If a problem other than ignition failure occurs during a demonstration (e.i. a rammer stuck in the bore, broken springs in the lock, etc.), bring it to the attention of the interpreter immediately. The command, "Ground Arms" will be given.
