4.1 Extension of 2.1; Muskets will only be loaded in a drill formation, under the command of the drill officer.
4.2 Mo musket will e loaded except in drill formation.
4.3 No musket will be primed except in drill formation.
4.4 Clearing [snap a cap], will only be conducted in the drill formation, as an additional part of the Inspection of Arms.
4.5 No musket will be loaded or fired until the appropriate commands are given by the drill officer.
4.6 In loading the musket, the following will be observed:
~ Loading of all muskets will be done in accordance with the prescribed movements of the military drill regulations of the Civil War [Hardee's Drill]; the following precautions will be observed:
~ a. Loading will commence with the hammer down on the last cap fired. Caps are not to be removed after firing until the next command to prime is given, in which order the old cap is removed and a new cap is replaced.
~ b. Powder charges will be placed in the muzzle so that the hand does not remain in the line of fire.
~ c. Projectiles [when, if ever, in use] will be placed between forefinger and thumb and placed in the muzzle so that the hand does not remain in the line of fire. No appendage or portion of the body, save the edge of the thumb and forefinger, will be placed over the bore. It is prohibited to place the palm of the hand over the rammer while ramming.
~ d. When the rammer is returned to the musket, it should be pulled down y the little finger, keeping the hand out of the line of fire.
~ e. Pointing the musket behind the firing line while loading is prohibited.
4.7 When an arm cannot be discharged, a misfire plan will be followed. See section X, Misfire Plan.
4.8 Inspection of Arms will be conducted before and after every drill, [i.e. firing drill].
4.9 All interpreters must e 16 years of age before handling a musket in formation, unless they meet criteria of Article II section 1 of the Bylaws.
