"WITH CHARITY FOR ALL:
THE LIFE OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN"
To mark the bi-centennial of Lincoln’s birth, we are pleased that Jerry Wiles will tell the story of Abraham Lincoln’s life through his inauguration in 1861.
Lincoln rose from backwoods poverty, watched his mother die when he was 7, and was raised by a father who believed that physical farm work was more important than an education. Lincoln married the daughter of a wealthy Kentucky slaveholder, and ran on a presidential platform to stop the spread of slavery. Upon his election, he filled cabinet posts not with his friends, but with men who did not believe he was capable of being a successful President. While serving as "Commander-in-Chief" he had to deal with an emotionally unstable wife and the death of a child while he led the country through a cataclysmic war. Abraham Lincoln is the subject of more books than any other person in the world. An average of one book a day is published on Lincoln, and 2009 will be no exception.
Jerry Wiles last visited our Round Table in April, 2004, to speak about Harriet Beecher Stowe. Mr. Wiles was born in Gardner, served in the Air Force, and attended Eastern Kentucky University, earning BA and MA degrees in history. For the next thirty- three years, Mr. Wiles taught US and Maine history at Greely High School in Cumberland, retiring in 2001. He lectures throughout the state to captive audiences on famous historical people, and his series is named "History with a Twist."
The meeting will be Thursday, February 19, 2009, at 7 pm, at the Curtis Memorial (Brunswick) Library, Morrell Room, on Pleasant St. The meeting is open to the public. FMI, or driving directions, call 721-0235.
