CONFEDERATE RAIDER CAPTURES AND BURNS THE USS John Paul Jones July 20,1864,Penobscot Bay
In a bold move, the Confederate raider Alabama appeared out of the fog to capture and burn the gallant USS John Paul Jones as she entered Penobscot Bay. The John Paul Jones’ spare rigging and a mast were taken to repair damage to the raider.
The crew of the USS John Paul Jones were allowed to take to their life boats and watched as their proud ship burned to the waterline and slipped beneath the waves.
News of the defeat has reached the CSS Must Roos and Captain Tom now feels victory at Fort Knox could belong to the South. Without the John Paul Jones to stop her, she has a clear path to land her soldiers down river to implement a land based attack on the unsuspecting Troops garrisoned at Fort Knox.
The 20th Maine troops merely number 54 and will prove no challenge for the Ship and the soldiers who are coming upriver. Perhaps the Captain of the Must Roos has not heard of the enforcement's garrisoned at the fort and the Union troops now outnumber their brave lads.
Only time will tell…….
