Again this year, Cpl Custer has encountered hordes of potential young rebels at the local middle school. This year, they came in waves (like those Alabama boys at Gettysburg) instead of as one huge battalion. He was able to mollify them by displaying and explaining the contents of his knapsack and haversack, showing them the dog tent (which he was able to display indoors using authentic sticks and not-quite-authentic plywood and bungee cords), discussing life in camp, and working his way through the manual of arms. Rumor says Custer is likely to encounter another group of potential hostiles at a school in nearby Canton just after the main body of Company B returns from Gettysburg. (Best wishes for that trip, by the way, both Custers will be thinking of you and wishing we were there.)

On Monday the 23rd, I encountered a battalion of inquisitive 5th graders from the Canton Intermediate School. They fired withering volleys of questions, but I was able to escape by displaying/explaining the usual gear and accouterments. Any excuse to put on the wool...
-Cpl. Custer
