Ladies and Gentlemen~ Upon further reading and interpretation on LD304 (SP0100). A number of questions formed in my head. (imagine that?). So, I spoke with them regarding my reservations and a little more information as I understand it is as follows: I asked how the bill was proposed: Sen. Davis proposed the bill out of concern after visiting Gettysburg He spoke with Dick Campbell and I was told Former Gov. Angus King and the proposal is the result. I asked the purpose of the commission: As I now understand it, the commission will be in place to oversee future fund raising to support the upkeep of the Maine Monuments at Gettysburg. I asked how the funds would be appropriated, whether in conjunction with the NPS perpetual care or independently: To be determined by the commission. I asked if there is any room to change the language, specifically limiting the commission members. And to include SUVs(Sons of the Union Veterans) vs. just stipulating Veterans: This is encouraged to be suggested at the public forum.(could use a soldier for this...hint, hint, nudge, nudge) I asked if there will be any opportunity for the public's input to the commission in the future? Something else to suggest at the public forum Monday. And the fundraising goal? The target funds for the commission as it stands is in the $50,000 - $70,000 range. The commission will further research and establish fund raisers to support the budget.(obviously there are no state funds to toss this way) I am most certain you all have other questions/concerns. Please share them with me within the next few days if you would like me to add them to my inquiry. Will anyone be able to attend the session on Monday? They could use all of the support they can get. If so, please get your brogans ready!! And, yes, James... getting the toe in the door with this bill may open the opportunity to venture to care for monuments in locations other than just Gettysburg Gettysburg is recognizable and a good catalyst. Ladies and Gentlemen~ I am just back from the working session on LD304. I must report that it is receiveing unanimous support... well, the issue is. It is now being worked out how to go about it. Due to legislature members being involved, there are hoops to jump through, etc. Everyone on the committee is looking at whatever options are available to make this bill happen.A suggestion was made to incorporate it into the Sesquicentennial, but I am with hopes we dissuaded them from that option. Also~ I was approached by the legislature's analysis and was told that of all the bills listened to of late on public radio... they got the most calls of any recent bill after I, Andy and Keith Sr. spoke. We CAN move mountains if we speak up!!! Stay tuned. Miss Rose
