Dear Sister~
The shadow is growing ever darker here with Father. Mother says he had a close call one day last week before my return, but doc was able to bring him around. Perhaps my going north for the few days was not such a good idea afterall. He is holding his own, but since my return, once again I am not known to him.
The Memorial Day recognition here was somewhat inspiring as well as disheartening. Donned in my Widow's Weeds, I was given quite the honor at a celebration that covered within two states. Unknown to me at the time, the morning included a guest speaker who was a retired Senior Chief off a Boomer. They also read the original proclamation declaring Remembrance Day as well as a reading of the Gettysburg Address. We stopped at the bridge that separates the two states and as the band played the Navy Hymn, we tossed flowers for those Still On Patrol. How humbling. 'Tis truly a case of last minute timing...but being where I was meant to be. They requested me to be a guest for Veteran's Day, but I declined as my plans for travel are not yet established.
I met some interesting Union soldiers who look forward to falling in and joining the 20th in future events. Nice fellows. Already have mail from some of them this morning. I was escorted by none other than General Lee himself. (Be nice, the widow represents all, not just the families of the Union.) He is also interested in coming north to add his part in the future.
We then proceeded to the local VFW where I participated in a Flag Disposal Ceremony.
And this was all before noon!
In the afternoon, I was then the only representative from the CW in the local parade. Was quite the thing as no one (other than family) knew it was me. Folks from all over have been asking about that mysterious CW widow (now that I educated them on who I was representing...ahem) Falling in back in my old hometown was a different experience than it was as a child. So as it stands, the Widow breezed in and out without anyone knowing where she came from or when she will return. Made people stop and think...helped educate by example why we honor the day. Makes it all worthwhile.
Norlands is coming soon. We have a good turn out so far (thank you). Over all, we are at about 150 confirmed/paid reenactors attending. If anyone still wishes to attend, you are most welcome and may do so as a walk-on provided you are attached to a unit who is participating. It will be best if you let either Norlands or myself know ahead of time so I can have your name waiting and approved at the gate. You are still welcome to just show up last minute they will just need to verify you are currently attached to a unit in attendance.
I need to go now, but will write again soon.
In Love and Light,
Your Sister,
Christabell
