PROSPECT, Maine (NEWS CENTER) --- Visitors to Fort Knox were taken on a trip back to the Civil War this weekend.
More than 200 re-enactors staged battles between the North and the South, as the Confederacy tried to capture the fort from the Union.
Fort Knox was never actually attacked during the Civil War, but participants say the battles helped carry on the legacy of those who fought.
"We run into school kids now that barely know that there was an American Civil War," said Dick Cylik, who is a member of the Union's 3rd Maine Regiment. "And to be able to keep this alive is really important."
"I hope to show people what it was really like back then," said Jenna Nelson, who also participated with the 3rd Maine. "They see that the life of a soldier was really quite hard back then."
Re-enactors came from as far away as Alabama, Michigan and Florida to take part in the mock battles. The 'Friends of Fort Knox' say it was one of the largest re-enactment gatherings that the fort has hosted.
